Mineral Resources relates to the mining and exploration of minerals such as gas and petroleum. It is an industry vital to South Australia’s economic growth. SA is the largest producer of uranium in Australia, hosting 40% of the world’s know recoverable uranium reserves. SA also produces around a third of Australia’s copper and hosts 70% of Australia’s known copper resources.
Not only is the mining industry an important employer, but it also contributes to the State’s economy through royalties. It is vital this industry is supported with productive infrastructure and the provision of a stable and regulatory environment. Given this industry’s proximity and potential impacts on environment and agriculture, any new or existing venture must be considered responsibly.
Energy is directly linked to the cost of living. South Australians have the highest electricity and gas prices in the nation. Coupled with rising taxes and water prices, many households are struggling. While some relief has recently been provided in power prices, further reductions are still needed.
