Speak up on managing roadside vegetation

22Nov

The Native Vegetation Council has developed new interim guidelines for managing native vegetation on roadsides and Member for Stuart, Dan van Holst Pellekaan MP, is encouraging people to have their say.

Councils and Department for Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) follow these guidelines when removing native vegetation to maintain safety and visibility along roadsides, while retaining important native vegetation.

“This is an important issue for our electorate given the extensive native vegetation growth along many of our rural roads,” Mr van Holst Pellekaan said.

“It is proactive and sensible to assess these new guidelines to improve safety along our roads.”

The new guidelines aim to give councils and DPTI greater ability to clear roadside vegetation regrowth up to 20 years of age – previously five years – without requiring approval, but when approval is required less information is required.

For native vegetation clearance outside the guidelines, a management plan can be developed for the Native Vegetation Council’s consideration and endorsement.
