With parts of the electorate of Stuart experiencing one of the driest seasons in decades, State Member for Stuart, Dan van Holst Pellekaan is encouraging people to seek support.

“Unfortunately there are large areas in our electorate experiencing extremely dry conditions, with many farmers and pastoralists facing their second consecutive poor season,” he said.

“There are a number of ways to seek assistance, whether that be financial or for health and wellbeing, and I strongly encourage people to take the time to look into these, as well as making sure they don’t self-assess.

“The Federal Government has made changes to the Farm Household Allowance, including increasing the asset threshold and introducing a supplementary payment of up to $12,000 for couples and $7,200 for singles.

“The challenging conditions are at the forefront of my mind and I am confident the State Government’s working group with key industry stakeholders and support agencies formed specifically for this situation will do the very best to support South Australian farmers.

“The 2018-19 State Budget has committed funding to extend rural financial counselling services through to June 30, 2020 to help farmers manage their books and fill out applications for assistance programs.

“It is also very important to remember the ramifications a dry season can have on our wider regional communities.

“Please support local businesses, whether this means shopping local for Christmas or encouraging your friends and family who live in other areas to come visit.

“We have wonderful communities in Stuart and some of the best tourism destinations in Australia are right here in our electorate.

“The positive impact of spending locally cannot be underestimated, as every dollar spent contributes to local employment.”
